Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry

When was it: 11th to 15th November 2001
Where was it: Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland

The theme for SETAC 2001 was "Changing Environmental Awareness: Societal Concerns and Scientific Responses." This theme was intended to stimulate discussions on the responsibilities that our professional society and the scientific community has on environmental issues, as well as exploring ways that public concerns could be addressed. The theme reflected our society's growth, maturation, and continuing commitment to improve on past experiences and integrated more fully the multidisciplinary components of modern environmental science to achieve the ultimate goal of protecting, managing, and restoring the environment for the enhancement of ecological and human welfare. To learn more about SETAC 2001 click here.

Bill Saunders provided instructions in spatial interpolation techniques and non-point source pollutant load estimation as part of the “Application of Geographic Information System (GIS) Technology to Water Quality Problems” short course at the SETAC 22nd Annual Meeting. The short course was presented on Sunday, 11 November 2001 and included a basic introduction to GIS technology, a demonstration of EPA’s BASINS water quality modeling tool, and an introduction to GISTOX, a model for the fate, transport, and bioaccumulation of toxic chemicals. Other instructors included Ferdinand Hellweger from HydroQual, Inc. and Gail Carter from Rutgers University.

International Oil Spill Conference and Exposition

When was it: 26th to 29th March 2001
Where was it: Tampa, Florida, USA

The 17th Biennial International Conference on the Prevention, Behavior, Control, and Cleanup of Oil Spills was held March 26-29, 2001 at the Tampa Convention Center, Tampa, Florida, U.S.A.. More than 2,000 people from 50 countries attended the technical sessions and viewed more than 300 exhibits. The International Oil Spill Conference's purpose is to create a global colloquium for public, government and business ideas addressing all aspects of oil spills impacting the environment. With a goal to promote an international exchange of information and ideas dealing with spill prevention, planning, response and restoration processes, protocols and technology. To promote international sharing of best practice as it relates to management of the varied impacts of oil spills and their aftermath. For more information click here.

The Conference theme for 2001 was: “Global Strategies for Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Restoration” The theme included an expanded perspective with a renewed emphasis on prevention. The scope of this theme covers the complete life cycle of oil and extends across the entire environment, from the marine to the inland regions. Environmental stewardship extends wherever oil is found, used or transported.
