QUALIFICATIONS

As an accomplished scientist, Dr King has 16 years experience in studying water circulation and mixing in freshwater and marine environments. Dr King’s research utilises mathematics, computational simulation techniques and data from rivers and the sea, to enhance knowledge of water movement and material transport and fate in coastal, river, estuarine and coral reef environments. For example, these techniques have been used to minimise the environmental impacts of oil spills and petroleum platform discharges, sediment dynamics and understand natural impacts from river plumes and larval movement. Currently Dr King is setting up the state-of-the-art WQMAP model to provide water quality modelling capability for the Gold Coast City Council. Setting up WQMAP for the Gold Coast's Nerang River estuary and its residential canals and lakes, involved the monitoring of water level fluctuations during 1998 and establishing a hydrodynamic model of the system, based on discharge, tides and winds. The Council also provided WQ monitoring data which was used to validate the WQMAP system.

Clients of Dr King’s include: BHP (Australia and Vietnam), Esso Australia Ltd, Apache Energy Corporation, WAPET, Sinclair Knight Merz, Gold Coast City Council and Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Snowy Mountain Engineering Corporation, Woodside Petroleum, Santos Ltd, Maxus Energy (Indonesia), Pollution Control Department (Thailand Government), Caltex Australia, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, .Previously, Dr King was a Senior Research Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville.
